Dr. Tom Hawkins and his wife Diane have written a most needful and valuable book in the ever increasing field of ministry to DID/RA survivors. In the last few years, many have discovered much heretofore unknown knowledge about DID/RA. But my friend Tom is unique in his ability to comprehend and minister both secularly and spiritually. Many have become expert in one or the other, few in both. Dr. Tom sees and states most clearly that only God can create lasting healing for such deeply wounded people. He teaches how to apply the blood and cross and resurrection life of Jesus to the deep wounds and fractures of the heart—but not in the manner of many who are ignorant of and insensitive to complex spiritual dynamics. The organization of DID Vol. 1 on the causes, development, and identification/recognition of DID provides the single most readable compendium I have seen. It is comprehensive and detailed enough to cover the field without getting lost or grinding an ax on some pet concept. While the material on memory is limited by dependence on the work of van der Kolk, the overall perspective on the place of memory work within recovery is very clear, helpful and needed, as is the treatment of programming and spiritual intervention. Recommended as a book that clearly does justice to the complexities of DID.

If you’re helping someone with complex DID and/or Sadistic Ritual Abuse, this is a must-read volume. Dr. Hawkins has combined extensive research with in-the-trenches experience to describe the dynamics of these diagnosis and treatment suggestions. His annotated bibliography alone is worth the price of the book! I have already been recommending this unique book to those I train and supervise.

I strongly suggest that anyone who has personally experienced and later recalled childhood abuse, or who has a natural or adopted child who has possibly experienced prolonged abuse, purchase this book. I also strongly urge anyone involved in Christian or pastoral counseling of any kind to buy and to study this book carefully.

I have received your book on DID…I appreciate and find it very helpful to read what you shared in the Preface…. I find your writing clear and also at a level for a lay person to understand. I think it also would be good as an introduction…pastors, if willing, would be more informed and more equipped enough to help! Thank you so much for writing this book and sharing the multi facets that also include the validity of the journey survivors experience….I would highly recommend your book. The humility of your work and experience shared in the Preface is humbling to me and speaks of Christ’s love.
